Rules for Interacting with ForeignersDon鈥檛 ask about income or expenses, don鈥檛 ask about age, don鈥檛 ask about love life or marriage, don鈥檛 ask about health, don鈥檛 ask about someone鈥檚 home or address, don鈥檛 ask about personal experience, don鈥檛 ask about religious beliefs or political views, don鈥檛 ask what someone does.

I’m not sure what this leaves as an acceptable conversation topic — the weather, perhaps? — but it’s clearly an attempt to protect Olympic guests from questions like “How much money did you make in America?” and “Why aren’t you married yet?” Both of those are real questions I’ve been asked at first meetings! But as the guest in a foreign country, I try not to take offense at something that’s not considered rude abroad.
